Healthy snacks – the benefits
Snacks don’t have to be sinful when you’re trying to control your weight. In fact snacking regularly, the right way, can help you look and feel great. Come on, let’s do this!
You’ll avoid temptation
If you feel overwhelmed by big meals or don’t have time to stop in the day, try eating small, regular, healthy snacks on the go. This helps you to keep going throughout the day and by being prepared you’ll avoid the temptation of less healthy nibbling.
It can help reduce sweet cravings
Snacking on the right things and at the right times will help to reduce cravings for sweet treats.
Can help you get you five-a-day
Healthy snack choices can help you to get your five-a-day of fruit and veg, and stock up on important vitamins and minerals.
Go for a healthy choice
When you’re stressed you can find you crave fatty and sugary foods. But snacks like chocolate or crisps can end up making you feel even worse. Reach for a healthy and filling choice like 25g (two tablespoons) of unsalted nuts instead.
Fruit and veg contain water
Fruit and veg contain lots of water and fibre which means that you can eat larger portions without consuming a lot of calories.
Healthy filling snacks include:
two tablespoons of tasty dried fruit or unsalted nuts
25g of toasted seed mix
air-popped popcorn with cinnamon or spicy chilli (skip the sugary flavours)
a hard-boiled egg
a tablespoon of peanut butter on a wholewheat cracker
50g of hummus with lots of veg for dipping.
