Potatoes are a store cupboard staple for many of us. But choose sweet potatoes instead for a healthy swap that provides more vitamin C and fibre. They can be baked or roasted just like potatoes, so next time you’re shopping pop some in your basket!
Have you tried your favourite fruit in a tin? Canned fruit is often cheaper, and it lasts longer. Make sure you choose fruit in juice, not syrup, and have a tin handy for a healthy snack or pudding when you get a sweet craving.
Teach an old meal new tricks
Refresh your favourite recipes by changing one ingredient to a healthier option. For example, choose brown pasta instead of white, or turkey mince instead of beef mince.
Make your morning meal count
Supercharge your breakfast by adding fruit. Mash a banana on your toast, grate apple into your porridge or scatter some berries on your cereal for a nutrient-packed start to the day.
Upgrade your toast
Do you like a savoury start? Try upgrading your breakfast toast with healthy toppings like poached egg, cottage cheese and tomatoes, or grilled mushrooms.
Choose the right bread
Toast can be a quick meal on busy days, but switch-up the nutrition by trying healthier types. Multi-seed, granary, soya and linseed breads are better for you – and more filling – than white bread.

Join a fun and fashionable cooking trend. Experiment with making courgette spaghetti or cauliflower rice to mix with standard spaghetti and rice, for light and nutritious versions of your favourite dinners.
Become a master of naan
If you’re a fan of Indian breads, try making healthier versions. Dry roasted methi paratha cuts out the ghee used in plain or stuffed parathas. Or if you’re making rotis or chapattis, use wholemeal flour to keep you fuller for longer.
